English lesson four Adjective


Welcome to the English lesson, lesson four…
Today I’m gonna teach you adjective:
What is an adjective?
The word used to describe a noun is called an adjective or we can also say adjective is a word used to add meaning to the noun.
For example:
This is a beautiful flower. We all know flower is a noun beautiful is describing the quality of flower hence it is an adjective.
All word denoting numbers, shapes quantity quality are adjectives.
For example:
The baby has round face. The shape of the baby face is described as round hence round is an adjective.
Formation of adjective
Many adjective are formed from noun:

Care            careful                dirt                  dirty
Hope           hopeful              sense              senseless
Shame        shameless          laugh              laughable
Gold            golden                 gift                  gifted
Some adjective are formed from verb:

Talk                           talkative
Cease                        ceaseless
Move                         moveable
Some adjectives are formed from other adjective:

Tragic                  Tragical
Three                   threefold
Black                    blackish
White                  whitish
Sick                     sickly
Adjectives are five kinds .they are:
(1)           Quality
(2)           Quantity
(3)           Number
(4)           Demonstration
(5)           interrogation
1) Adjective of quality: Adjective of quality show the kind or quality of a person or a thing.
For example:
    (1)He is an honest man.
     (2)Mumbai is a large city.
In first example adjective is honest because honest describe the quality of a person.
In second example adjective is large because here large describe the quality.
Adjective of quality answer the question: of what kind?
Note: adjective of quality are also called descriptive adjective.
Adjective of quantity:-Adjectives of quantity show how much of a thing is meant.
For example:
He has lost all his wealth.in this example all is an
adjective of Quantity which describe the wealth or money.
Adjective of number: adjective of number shoes how many person or things are meant or in what order a person or thing stands.
For example:
The hand has five fingers.in this example 5 is an adjective of number as it indicate the number of finger the hand has.
Adjective of number will answer the question: how many
Demonstrative adjective: demonstrative adjectives point out which person or thing is meant.
For example:
Ram is stronger than pappu.in this sentence ram is demonstrative adjective.
Demonstrative adjectives will answer the question: which?
Interrogative adjective: word like what which and whose when used with noun to ask question are called interrogative adjective.
For example:
Which way shall we go. In this example the adjective which is asking a question in which direction.
“What” is used in general sense and “which” in selective sense.
